COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys and Girls Club of Southcentral Alaska paused its afterschool clubhouse programs on October 20 due to low cash flow—furloughing 87 of its 144 staff while keeping its childcare center and Turnagain Elementary site open. The nonprofit is now working to raise $250,000 to restore the clubhouse services for its 1,363 active members.  Alaska's News Source
  • At the recent Alaskans 4 Personal Freedom Conference, attendees raised $1,820 for Downtown Anchorage Hope Center in a split-the-pot contest— the winner returned their half to support the center. • The SBA opened low-interest disaster loans for Western Alaska residents and businesses affected by heavy storms from Typhoon Halong—loans include provisions for damage to personal property at subsistence camps but exclude real estate—and Kelly Loeffler said homeowners could borrow up to $500,000 and businesses up to $2 million to support recovery.  KBRW
  • Workers began repair on the South Anchorage pedestrian bridge—damaged in a January windstorm—and they are fixing the walkway connecting Rabbit Creek Elementary School to DeArmoun Road over Seward Highway.
