ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • 21-year-old Romanian Raul Timișag died paddleboarding on DeLong Lake Sunday while on a Work and Travel program in Alaska to help his sister open a pastry shop — his family now awaits his body's return to Romania.  Alaska's News Source

CRIME NEWS

  • An Anchorage man, 31-year-old JB Matha, pleaded not guilty in court to ten charges including DUI and second degree murder in the hit-and-run death of former Deadliest Catch cast member Francis Katongan, who was struck on February 18 near Northern Lights and Minnesota—police say vehicle damage, debris, and his refusal to take sobriety tests link him to the incident.  Alaska's News Source
  • A Sewalik man named Adrian Ticket, 37, was charged with second-degree murder and assaults nearly six months after Nettie Ballot was found dead in his home in February — he admitted beating her before sleeping but said she was alive when he awoke, and he is now in custody at Anvil Mountain Correctional Center.  Alaska's News Source

  • At the Anchorage Museum, Alaska Native designers showcased their work in the Far North Fashion Show, part of the Arctic Encounters Summit held July 30. The event highlighted Indigenous culture through traditional garments + modern designs that brought fresh style to the runway.  Alaska Public Media

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On July 24, the state economic development agency applied for a Clean Water Act permit to build 78.5 miles of road into the mineral-rich backcountry west of the Susitna River — the transportation department is set to develop an initial 22-mile segment while the full route would span about 100 miles.  Anchorage Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alaska lawmakers will vote today on overriding Gov. Dunleavy’s veto, which would restore more than $50.6 million in funds for K-12 schools to address crowded classes and needed repairs—local educators say the money is vital as districts face rising costs and staffing challenges.  Alaska Beacon
  • State lawmakers gave only $40 million for school repairs when nearly $800 million was requested, and Governor Dunleavy cut almost $28 million from the education budget. He has called the legislature to a special session today — a step to address Alaska’s long-term budget shortfall that leaves rural schools at risk.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance’s administration has introduced new strategies to address homelessness by modifying camp abatement and expanding shelter services as part of ongoing efforts over the past year. While progress at Davis Park has reduced visible encampments, many unsheltered residents have shifted to alleys—keeping challenges unresolved.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The US Supreme Court ruled 8-0 in the 7 County Infrastructure Coalition vs. Eagle case, saying environmental reviews must focus only on a project’s direct impact—limiting lawsuits that have delayed Alaska projects and clarifying NEPA standards.  Must Read Alaska
