  • Hundreds gathered at Fort Richardson National Cemetery today for the Wreaths Across America ceremony to honor veterans, as volunteers placed wreaths on graves + shared a quiet moment of remembrance.  Alaska's News Source
  • Federal funding for museums and libraries was restored after a court ruling reversed grant cuts made last spring. The Klukwan Library regained its $150,000 and $10,000 grants and will reopen five to six days a week near Haines.  KTOO
  • Jellybean, a malamute mix, survived a 10-day ordeal in a Kipnuk home after ex‑Typhoon Halong and now stays with foster Aubrey Morrison near Eagle River Nature Center. Officials set a Dec. 15 deadline for families to claim nearly 20 rescued dogs—unclaimed pets will be spayed, neutered and available for adoption.  Anchorage Daily News

  • JBER alerted base personnel of a structure fire that prompted closure of HQ Loop and Richardson Drive (between 2nd and 5th) near the 11th Airborne Division Headquarters; emergency vehicles were seen outside and officials have not confirmed the fire's exact location.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Anchorage’s outdoors community honors Dick Griffith, a trailblazer who spent decades inspiring local adventurers. He died earlier this month at age 98 after a storied life that included pioneering Alaska expeditions and hosting community gatherings (his legacy lives on).  Anchorage Daily News

  • ADF&G is seeking public input on changes at McNeil River State Game Sanctuary (including allowing wheeled planes and more flexible viewing permits) through an online survey open until Jan. 23.  Your Alaska Link
  • Scientists with the Alaska Earthquake Center say a magnitude 7 earthquake (Dec. 6) beneath Hubbard Glacier has revealed a possible connector fault linking major fault systems under thick ice. They are studying the aftershocks to better understand Alaska's hidden tectonic features.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Athletes with Special Olympics Alaska braved cold, windy conditions by plunging into Goose Lake on Dec. 13. The event showcased their endurance and boosted local community spirit.  Alaska's News Source
  • APU skier Ari Endestad won the men’s freestyle sprint by a fraction of a second and Lauren Jortberg clinched the women’s race at Kincaid Park on Friday, Dec. 12. The event concludes today with a 10K classic race starting at 10:30 a.m.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Anchorage native Cole Magner recalled his decades-long friendship with coach Urban Meyer following Meyer's induction into the College Football Hall of Fame on Dec. 9 in Las Vegas.
