- ➤ Three new Alaska poetry books by Vivian Faith Prescott, Jonas Lamb, and Shauna Potocky weave nature into personal tales and coastal imagery — each offering its own unique view. - ➤ A steel arch honoring sled dog racing was installed over Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage to mark a long-planned tribute to mushing history. Jim Huettl of the Anchorage Mushing District said the 56-foot, 15,000-pound arch will be officially unveiled with a lighting ceremony at 5 p.m. Dec. 5 — future phases will add interpretive signs along Fourth Avenue. - ➤ Residents in Southcentral Alaska were startled awake when a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck 44 miles west of Anchorage at 6:38 a.m. on Saturday—no injuries were reported and the quake's depth was measured at 47.8 miles. Alaska's News Source
- ➤ Flood-damaged homes in Kipnuk remain frozen as cleanup work continues in winter while residents stay in the school with power and limited water+ the Traditional Council has ruled that no one will return until conditions are safe. Alaska's News Source
- ➤ Anchorage fire officials said outdoor fire numbers rose as lower temperatures set in yesterday—prompting them to monitor the situation closely. Alaska's News Source
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Anchorage fire chief Doug Schrage said structure fires are slightly down while outdoor fires have increased in recent years—on average, the department handles one working structure fire each day. He urged residents to install working smoke alarms and follow safety measures—such as cleaning chimneys, dryer vents, and avoiding daisy chaining extension cords—to help prevent fire-related tragedies. - ➤ Anchorage recorded its 15th pedestrian death this year, tying last year’s toll and prompting leaders to call for faster safety fixes—such as better lighting and clearer crosswalks—to protect pedestrians.
