  • Big Ray’s, an all-weather outfitter, partnered with Xtratuf and GCI to donate 300 pairs of boots to survivors displaced in Western Alaska after Typhoon Halong hit last month—supporting a long-term recovery effort to help people stay warm and rebuild their lives.  Alaska's News Source

  • Fairbanks-based Alaska Native filmmakers from Deenaadàį' Productions are adapting Velma Wallis’ 1993 book into a 14-minute film that is told fully in Gwich'in—an effort to honor Native language and tradition. The short film will be shown in Fairbanks on Dec. 5 at 5 p.m. and in Anchorage on Dec. 13 at 3 p.m.  Alaska Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new federal rule now omits nursing from the list of professional degrees, capping student loans at $100,000 instead of $200,000 — a change that may strain advanced training for nurses and worsen the local shortage — and Alaska Nurses Association president Shannon Davenport warned that it could force patients to seek care out of state.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mat-Su Central Landfill now uses a new evaporator system that treats leachate from decomposing trash and releases a vapor plume up to 20 feet on weekdays. The machine saves the borough about $270,000 a year by stopping 100 trips for treatment in Anchorage — officials say the system may be expanded to a larger facility next year.  Alaska Public Media
  • Fishermen off our coast have had a hard time catching enough halibut over the past decade as warmer waters have made the fish smaller and less common—spurring tests of new gear to help keep fish on the line and orcas away.   • A wheelchair user was seen traveling with traffic because sidewalks still had snow, prompting Anchorage officials to review who clears walkways and update plowing policies — they said the review will help clear up responsibilities after storms.  Alaska's News Source
  • Federal HUD policy changes have shifted funding for Anchorage's homelessness programs, capping permanent housing grants to 30%—now favoring transitional projects with stricter criteria and January application deadlines.
