COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Anchorage launched the Good Neighbor Fund to help unhoused residents by providing food, shelter and medical care with donations managed by trained outreach teams + nearly 40 community members gathered on Wednesday at Town Square Park where over $30,000 was raised. - ➤ Anchorage is hosting several events before the holidays—an Employment Resource Fair at Mountain View Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and trivia at Whale’s Tail from 7 to 9 p.m. are set for today. Other activities include a Saturday Kimchi Day Festival at Wendler Middle School, concerts at Paradise Club, free craft sessions, live jazz at Writer’s Block and holiday shopping events through Sunday. - ➤ Firefighters, along with NuVision Credit Union volunteers and Peppercini’s Catering, served nearly 500 Central Middle School students a Thanksgiving meal with turkey, ham, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls and pumpkin pie that filled the day with holiday spirit. - ➤ 20-year-old Jossline Jackson, a junior at the University of Alaska Southeast, is studying environmental science with a snow science minor and has built her mountain skills through ski instructing and a Sealaska Heritage internship that earned her avalanche certifications. Her Tlingit heritage and early culture camps shaped her passion for glaciers and backcountry skiing, and she will pursue Avalanche Pro 1 certification this winter — a step toward becoming a glaciologist or avalanche forecaster. - ➤ College Gate Elementary in Anchorage welcomed over 80 students displaced from Western Alaska after Typhoon Halong hit the region — the school used its Yup’ik language immersion program and extra support measures to help students adjust to their new surroundings. Anchorage Daily News

- ➤ Anchorage residents follow state guidelines that say 1 to 2 inches of ice supports one person, 3 inches holds several people or a snowmachine, and 10 inches can carry a truck; residents like Sarah Falkoff and Bryn Clark use trusted methods such as waiting for trucks and testing with an ice screw to check safety at Westchester Lagoon. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Experts say the long-used 95% figure for Alaska’s imported food has no clear data source and is just a rough estimate that has persisted for decades. A spokesperson noted that a new agriculture department will be formed soon—aiming to improve data collection to track the state’s food system. KBRW
- ➤ Alaskans who qualify for SNAP received half of their benefits nearly one week late and full benefits two weeks late because the state did not use the $5M emergency fund during the shutdown.
