Good morning, Anchorage. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 17th of November.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Photographer Will H. Leigh traveled to Alaska during the Klondike gold rush in 1898 to follow prospectors and capture images of the landscape, local villages & daily life. He left the state with over 700 negatives that show the harsh winter conditions and the challenges of gold fever.  Anchorage Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alaska small business owners in Anchorage say the end of enhanced premium tax credits in December will force some to pay up to three times more for health insurance, threatening their ability to keep their businesses running. Congress has not yet extended the subsidies, so many owners are reexamining expenses and staffing—hoping to find a way to manage the steep costs.  Anchorage Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Fishermen and researchers tested new echoreflective netting—designed to block killer whales from entering bottom trawl nets—in a flume tank that simulates Bering Sea conditions in 2024. Recent acoustic recordings show orcas still gather near the nets, but researchers say the barrier may encourage them to seek food elsewhere.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, airlines will resume their regular flight schedules at 6 a.m. EST after the FAA lifted restrictions imposed during the government shutdown that had cut flights by up to 6 percent. The decision comes after air traffic controller staffing improved, restoring operations at major hubs including Anchorage.  Anchorage Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Dimond’s volleyball team won the 4A state title at the Alaska Airlines Center Saturday by rallying past Colony in a hard-fought five-set match—recovering from a quarterfinal loss and a tough elimination run.
