- ➤ Alaska officials and tribal advocates said the devastation from ex-Typhoon Halong—seen as a wake-up call—has shown that vulnerable villages need better plans to deal with harsher storms. - ➤ Anchorage officials are asking residents to clear snow and ice from fire hydrants this winter because the eight-member Hydrant Crew must maintain about 7,500 hydrants from Eklutna to Girdwood + keeping them clear helps firefighters respond quickly in an emergency.
