- ➤ After more than 30 days of a federal shutdown, air traffic controllers and TSA workers remain unpaid causing delays and airport closures that have affected flights. Alaska Airlines will add 12 nonstop flights from Anchorage to Honolulu starting Dec. 3 and other carriers plan to expand routes to help travelers. Anchorage Daily News

- ➤ 90-year-old Richard Wien has published his memoir, The Flying Wiens, that tells the story of his family’s work in Alaska aviation from old biplanes to modern jets. The book shares his memories of growing up near pilots and the early local airlines—offering a look at a century of flight history. Anchorage Daily News
- ➤ Anchorage’s Día de Muertos celebrations have shifted from large public gatherings to offering free at-home ofrenda kits and a video tribute that will beam on the Anchorage Museum from sundown to 10 p.m. Event coordinator Indra Arriaga Delgado said the change was made to protect community members amid increased immigration enforcement and political pressures. - ➤ Anchorage School District faced strong criticism at a meeting on Oct. 29 about proposals to close two elementary schools next school year—parents and staff worry that the move could lead to larger classes and disrupt special education programs. - ➤ On October 30th, Judge Pamela Washington—Alaska’s first Black female judge appointed in 2010—retired at The Equity Center in Anchorage where friends and colleagues honored her nearly four decades of service and inspiring legacy; she now leads the National Association of Women Judges. SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The UAA Seawolves hockey team beat No. 6 Denver 4-3 in overtime on Oct. 31 when Dimitry Kebreau scored at 3:55 in overtime at Magness Arena — the win marked the team’s first over a ranked opponent since Jan. 20, 2024. Anchorage Daily News
- ➤ On Halloween night, UAA won the first set against UAF at the Alaska Airlines Center but lost the next three, marking their second defeat to the Nanooks this season. Coach Stacie Meisner said the team showed strong resilience despite key errors (with fans in costumes cheering them on) as they prepared for four more home games. Anchorage Daily News
- ➤ Between Oct. 29 and Nov. 1, Alaska high schools and colleges played hockey, volleyball, wrestling and basketball as teams from Palmer, Anchorage and other communities posted key wins—many games were close and decided by narrow margins.
