  • The Dimond Center is hosting its annual Malloween event—asking participants to bring at least two non-perishable food items to support The Food Bank of Alaska.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Dimond Center will host its annual Malloween on Friday, Oct. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m., asking participants to bring at least two non-perishable food items to support The Food Bank of Alaska amid challenges from Typhoon Halong and SNAP cuts starting Saturday + a costume contest and family-friendly activities will be featured to offer extra fun + the event aims to help those in need.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • Blaines Art Supply is hosting a group watercolor show in November and invites local artists to submit their work by October 31. A free opening reception will be held on November 8—giving the public a chance to view the artwork and meet the creators—with a $5 fee applying only if an artist needs a backing board.  Your Alaska Link

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents at Lake Otis Elementary in Anchorage are urging the school district not to close their school next year as proposals to shut Lake Otis and Fire Lake Elementary move forward because of low enrollment and rising maintenance costs. The district will hold community conversations today at Bettye Davis East High, on Oct 30 at Chugiak High, and on Nov 1 at the ASD Education Center before the school board votes on Nov 18.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists at the University of Alaska Anchorage and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory are developing insulation made from fungus and wood pulp to offer a sustainable replacement for plastic foam in extreme climates. They are testing the compostable boards in Fairbanks under severe temperature shifts—efforts that may cut wildfire risks and improve housing safety.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • USPS urges evacuees impacted by former Typhoon Halong to submit a Change of Address request so they can have mail delivered at the Egan Center makeshift mailroom, where residents pick up mail daily from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.—the agency expects to be caught up by the end of the week.  Alaska's News Source
  • The state is moving roughly 300 evacuees from shelters at Alaska Airlines Center — where people slept on cots — and Egan Center to hotels by the end of the week. Evacuees will continue to receive three meals a day and school bus rides while state officials and partners work to repair housing in Western Alaska.  Alaska Public Media

  • UAA senior John Peckham won the GNAC men’s cross country title on Oct. 25 in Billings—he finished the 8K in 24:04 and was named Athlete of the Year as his team placed second with 58 points. The Anchorage Wolverines snapped a six-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over Chippewa Steel, with brothers Luc and Rylan Bydal and forward Chase Trompeter recording key goals.  Anchorage Daily News
