COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dog evacuees from Western Alaska have been arriving in Anchorage since last week as responders work to reunite them with their owners or arrange foster homes—about 45 dogs have been received so far. Anchorage Animal Care and Control asks anyone who spots a dog to call 907-343-8138 or schedule a shelter walkthrough.  Alaska's News Source

  • Anchorage saw its first snowfall and drivers rushed to change to winter tires; Muldoon Auto managed a steady flow while Timis Alpina experienced long waits. Both shops urge customers to call ahead and have their lug nut lock key ready—helping them avoid delays.  Your Alaska Link
  • On Oct. 3, billionaire John Malone asked Alaska regulators for permission to take majority control of GCI Liberty Inc.—the parent of the largest residential internet provider—and to boost his voting power while keeping financial documents confidential; public comments on the request are due today.  KBRW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UAF students built the first 3D printed building in Nome using a printer called Avalon Version Zero to tackle challenges like harsh weather and a short building season. They hope its method of using local materials will soon help print walls on the moon — a step toward making space habitats.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On October 22nd, Chugach Electric Association’s Board approved a $26.4 million investment for the 10 MW-AC Beluga Solar Project at the Beluga power plant near Tyonek, which will use existing transmission lines to cut costs and reduce carbon intensity by 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040. The project uses the federal Investment Tax Credit to lower net costs to about $16.4 million + aims to stabilize consumer rates by offsetting volatile natural gas prices.  Must Read Alaska

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday morning, thousands in Anchorage and Matanuska-Susitna Borough lost power when a load-shedding event triggered cascading outages—by mid-morning, utility companies restored power for all affected customers.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Marijuana Control Board is reviewing a process that turns hemp CBD into THC using heat, citrus oil and acid, which critics say is unsafe and breaks state law. Next Level Labs was fined $63,000 and halted conversions while its appeal is pending + board members insist that rule-breaking will be punished.  The Alaska Current
  • The state began distributing disaster relief payments in Western Alaska after ex-Typhoon Halong, paying over $217,000 so far and processing more than 941 applications (applications remain open through Nov. 9). Federal aid of $25 million was approved and services like ID replacement are offered at Anchorage shelters (302 evacuees are sheltering) as the governor waived document fees.  KTOO
  • The USPS set up a temporary location in Anchorage—helping evacuees from Kipnuk and Kwigillingok get documents and change of address forms. The resources are available this week for residents displaced by ex-Typhoon Halong.  Alaska's News Source
