- ➤ On Friday, Oct. 24, volunteers at St. Innocent Russian Orthodox Cathedral hosted a Native food potluck featuring traditional dishes such as moose soup, beluga whale, and akutaq to support Western Alaska storm evacuees staying in local shelters—organizers aimed to offer a taste of home to those affected. Evacuees from the Yukon-Kuskokwim region and nearby communities joined the event, which supplied donated foods to help ease their displacement—local groups and church members worked together to provide comforting meals. - ➤ The Alaska Native Arts Foundation launched an online directory mid-October that now lists over 200 Alaska Native artists and is free to join. The foundation will work to grow the list to over 1,000 artists and plans its first Alaska Native Arts Economic Summit next year—bringing together artists and key partners across the state. - ➤ New studies showed that the Alaska Pollock fishery brought $832 million to the state's economy in 2023 — the fishery works in the eastern Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska and remains a key revenue source for the state. Alaska's News Source
- ➤ Recent studies found that the Alaska pollock fishery supported about 6,000 jobs and generated $832 million in economic activity for Alaska in 2023. Ron Rogness, director at Genuine Alaska Pollock Producers, explained that 2,869 jobs were from harvesting and processing while another 3,450 came from in-state purchases—highlighting the fishery’s key economic role.
