COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bean’s Café has partnered with World Central Kitchen to create over 2,700 meal kits since last Friday for people impacted by former Typhoon Halong and is up almost 60% in meal production from pre-storm levels. The kits, which feed a family of five, are flown to Bethel for distribution + the café provides food services for evacuees and local events as demand grows ahead of the holiday season and expiring SNAP benefits.  Alaska's News Source
  • Blackbull Native Store and Alaska Bead Company are collecting crafting and art supplies — donated by local residents — to help people displaced by Typhoon Halong. The stores plan to use the donations to provide comfort and support as affected community members rebuild their homes.  Alaska's News Source
  • Team Rubicon opened a new donation center in the repurposed Chugach Electric warehouse at 1120 East First Ave, where volunteers are collecting new warm clothing, hygiene products, and bedding Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help survivors impacted by the remains of ex-typhoon Halong + items must have tags attached so volunteers can quickly sort and deliver them.  Your Alaska Link

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Savoonga residents nearly finished building a reindeer meat processing facility—this plant will soon be reviewed by federal regulators for commercial use as a new way to boost food security and local income. The project transforms traditional subsistence practices into a formal industry amid a changing climate that has made hunting less reliable.  KBRW
  • Over 3 million visitors came to Alaska during the 24/25 tourism season from May 2024 to April, which was 33,000 more than the previous season thanks to a strong cruise sector at key ports like Juneau and Unalaska—although winter travel dipped by 5.5% for the first time in nearly 20 years with under 400,000 visitors. The tourism report, released by the Alaska Travel Industry Association, shows mixed travel trends for the season.  Alaska Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Former Kipnuk resident Tamua Paul recalled how her home lifted from its foundation during Typhoon Halong, trapping her and her niece until rescuers freed them. Her family later evacuated to Bethel as much of the village was damaged by flooding—leaving her community to face long-term rebuilding challenges.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • If the shutdown continues, over 66,000 Alaskans will lose SNAP benefits for November—state officials say no state funds can make up for the federal shortfall, and similar cuts are expected across the nation.  KTOO
  • Alaska Office of Children's Services reported that its 2023 progress shows a stark racial gap among staff, with only 8.7% of caseworkers Alaska Native compared to nearly two-thirds of foster children. The agency is addressing this gap by partnering with tribes + offering cultural training to provide more culturally responsive care.  KTOO
  • Downtown Anchorage has grown busier as evacuees arrived, so officials blocked a lane on Fifth Avenue+ changed a key traffic signal to manage the increased foot traffic. City leaders have increased police patrols and are fine-tuning measures to keep residents and guests safe.  Your Alaska Link
  • Crews began repairing the Rabbit Creek pedestrian bridge over Seward Highway this week after wind damage closed it.   • Sen. Cynthia Lummis introduced S. Res. 457 on Oct 20 to set the week of Oct 19 as Coal Week—honoring the coal industry and the workers who support America’s energy needs.
