COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Anchorage and surrounding areas will host a range of Halloween and fall events—such as zoo festivities, trick or treating, haunted walks and indoor parties from Oct 24 through early November—that offer fun for both families and adults. Local restaurants are also supporting a food bank week from Oct 20 to Oct 26 to help raise funds for neighbors facing food insecurity. KBRW
- ➤ More than 16,000 donors contributed over $2M to the Western Alaska Disaster Relief Fund during the AFN Convention at the Dena'ina Center after Typhoon Halong displaced hundreds, and less than $200,000 has been allocated so far; an advisory group will meet soon to decide on grants while local groups now request monetary help instead of in-kind donations — a shift to support rebuilding and stabilization efforts. - ➤ The Anchorage School District and the Anchorage Education Association are headed to arbitration after contract negotiations broke down over teacher pay and health care benefits following the union contract’s expiration on June 30. The union's updated proposal calls for wage increases of 8%, 7% and 6% while the district offered 3% each year—this is the first arbitration since 2006 amid rising concerns over teacher retention. - ➤ On October 12th, the remnants of Typhoon Halong struck Western Alaska, causing severe coastal erosion and forcing hundreds to evacuate by military aircraft to Anchorage and Bethel—disrupting homes and vital services. - ➤ Alaska Department of Transportation crews began repair work on the Rabbit Creek pedestrian overpass over the Seward Highway after a mid-January windstorm damaged its roof and sides and affected about 40 students at Rabbit Creek Elementary.
