- ➤ After Typhoon Halong hit Western Alaska, over 600 people were evacuated by military aircraft from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta to Bethel and Anchorage—state officials now assess the severe damage to key villages. Officials will move evacuees into temporary non-congregate housing and are planning long-term recovery as they seek federal disaster aid—aiming to restore basic services across the impacted areas. - ➤ Rep. Begich delivered his first address to the Alaska Federation of Natives on October 18th, highlighting economic benefits from the One Big Beautiful Bill that will boost revenue for native communities through new lease sales in the North Slope and NPR-A—he also explained that changes to Medicaid exempt Alaska Natives using the Indian Health Service, stressing that native rights to subsistence must be preserved for the bill to move forward. - ➤ The Anchorage Wolverines fell 5-3 to the Fairbanks Ice Dogs at Sullivan Arena on Oct. 9 after tying the game in the third period, with two late power-play goals ending their comeback bid and extending a five-game losing streak—Coach Mike Aikens said the team made progress on penalty killing even as evacuees from Western Alaska found a brief respite at the game.
