COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sept. 26, a fire at the Ravenwood Condominiums displaced 45 residents who now struggle with housing and mortgage payments while investigations into the fire’s cause continue—residents credit a quick police response with preventing injuries.  Alaska Public Media
  • The Alaska Federation of Natives convention opened yesterday in Anchorage with a call for unity and stronger community services—Natasha Singh of the Tribal Health Consortium stressed the need to balance funds between basic services and a full Permanent Fund dividend—while events continue at the Dena’ina Center.  Alaska Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Emergency officials evacuated hundreds from remote villages after a storm moved homes far from their foundations—forcing 1,800 residents from 49 communities to take refuge in 12 shelters, including a C-17 flight from Bethel to Anchorage on Thursday.  Alaska's News Source
  • Indigenous groups and local leaders are addressing damage from a catastrophic storm that displaced over 1,000 people and left one person dead with two still missing in Western Alaska. The Alaska Federation of Natives will host a donation drive today at the Elders & Youth conference at the Dena’ina Center—helping provide water, food, and essential supplies to affected neighbors.  KTOO

  • Tribal leaders gathered on October 15 in Anchorage for the Alaska Tribal Unity Gathering to discuss subsistence rights and work toward stronger representation—Native Peoples Action head Andrea Burgess urged support for tribal students to help boost Indigenous voices in legal matters.  Alaska Public Media
  • Since Oct. 1, St. Paul has had no regularly scheduled flights after Ravn Alaska ended service, leaving residents to rely on costly charter flights—each one-way ticket costing about $1,300. The tribal government now operates these charters while the Department of Transportation reviews bids, including a proposal from Aleutian Airways that offers fares of $399 amid strong community support.  KBRW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Anchorage Health Department confirmed a measles case in an unvaccinated traveler who arrived on Monday after stopping in Las Vegas and Seattle from areas with active outbreaks. Officials said the person isolated upon arriving and advised those exposed at the airports to watch for symptoms—tracing efforts are underway.  Alaska's News Source
