COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anchorage residents took part in an event to heal and end domestic violence — people wore purple and carried signs to raise awareness and break the cycle of abuse. Speakers including Polly Andrews from Southcentral Foundation and Tagaloa Faipauna shared personal stories and encouraged the community to speak out and seek help.  Your Alaska Link
  • The Red Cross of Alaska and the Anchorage Fire Department are partnering to install free smoke alarms at the Sound the Alarm event today from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.—the program will also offer fire safety tips and help families make escape plans, following the installation of over 500 alarms so far this year.  Alaska's News Source

  • A new cannabis cafe on Boniface Parkway in East Anchorage will open early 2026 as Uncle Herb’s transitions into a venue where customers can enjoy THC-infused edibles and beverages—smoking was dropped from plans after the Assembly postponed the ordinance. General Manager Aaron Stiassny said the space will also host live events, offering a safe, alcohol-free spot for socializing.  The Alaska Current

  • Tanya Pont was named acting director of athletics at UAA on Oct. 10 — replacing Ryan Swartwood, who left for California State University Northridge with his final day Friday. Head men’s basketball coach Rusty Osborne also gains extra duties as acting senior associate athletic director, and UAA will launch a national search for a permanent director with committee letters due by Oct. 20.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alaska federal workers are bracing for potential layoffs as part of an ongoing staffing review—officials have not yet set a decision timeline.  Alaska's News Source
  • Federal workers in Anchorage are worried as the White House may cut jobs amid the shutdown, leaving many already unpaid. Union officials say up to 200,000 federal employees could lose their jobs nationwide—meaning about 800 to 1,000 workers in Alaska may soon face layoffs.  Alaska's News Source
  • Alaska officials announced that nearly $900,000 in federal funds have been provided to extend the WIC program until Nov. 8—this boost prevents the state from having to use its own money after today. The funding helps low-income mothers and children access healthy food during the government shutdown.  Anchorage Daily News
  • An Anchorage restaurant worker seeking asylum, Santiago Martinez, was released from ICE custody after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order that halted his detention without bond. Arrested on August 11 outside his sushi restaurant, Martinez returned to Anchorage and is set to resume work Saturday — a decision stemming from a class action lawsuit challenging ICE procedures.  Alaska Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • In 2023, opioids killed a record number of Alaskans—13% of those who died had prescription drugs in their system, while nonfatal opioid overdoses declined slightly last year.  Alaska's News Source
  • On World Mental Health Day, the Alaska Mental Health Trust Association’s scorecard shows mixed results with fewer children regulating their feelings yet a drop in child maltreatment. The data reveals a near tripling of chronic homelessness to 99.5 per 100,000—rising alcohol-induced deaths and increased mental health service use alongside decreased youth self-harm visits.  Must Read Alaska
