GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Government shutdown has raised concerns for fisheries managers who now lack the necessary stock data to set December harvest limits for pollock and other groundfish—key for starting the 2026 season. Officials say if the shutdown extends beyond 15 days, delayed assessments could hurt local fishing communities and the broader industry.  KTOO
  • U.S. military leaders refocused training in Alaska because of threats from Russia and China. Exercises like Northern Edge and Arctic Edge took place in Anchorage and remote areas—efforts that officials say keep local bases ready for conflict.  Alaska Beacon
  • Lawmakers sued Gov. Dunleavy over his executive order to create an agriculture department during a special session—arguing that it bypasses their chance to review and vote on the policy. The legislative council spent up to $100,000 on legal fees and asks a Juneau Superior Court judge to rule on the order before it takes effect in January.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance unveiled new blowers, plows and graders that will help with winter cleanup and introduced a 14-acre snow disposal site holding 1 million cubic yards of snow—funded by a new tax levy approved in April expected to raise $3.5 million annually. The mayor said more equipment will arrive over several years to address heavier snowfall.  Alaska's News Source
  • A new bipartisan Alaska Gasline Caucus met yesterday in Anchorage to assess Alaska’s readiness for an 800-mile LNG pipeline, co-chaired by Rep. Mia Costello and Rep. George Rauscher. The meeting featured presentations from Glenfarne Alaska LNG, state labor officials, and the university, and discussed a final investment decision by late 2025 and construction starting mid-2026 — potentially creating 12,000 jobs if approved.  Must Read Alaska
