ECONOMY NEWS

  • Alaska’s Department of Fish and Game announced new harvest limits for Bering Sea crab, allowing fishers to catch 9.3 million pounds of snow crab from Oct. 15 to May and 2.68 million pounds of red king crab from Oct. 15 to Jan. 15, with a combined 11.25 million-pound cap for tanner crab that nearly doubles last year’s limits—1 million pounds of the snow crab cap will be made up of snow-tanner hybrids due to a recent boom in these species. The new limits follow slow stock recoveries after a 2018 marine heatwave, and warmer sea temperatures could affect future crab populations.  Anchorage Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Alaska education officials asked the state school board to delay a funding regulation change that may cut local services—such as school snowplowing and student nutrition funding—if it passes. The board will vote on the proposal on Oct.9 after receiving more than 600 public comments from educators and local leaders.  Anchorage Daily News
  • At a work session on Tuesday, the district explained that declining enrollment has led to plans to close Lake Otis and Fire Lake schools and consolidate students into other buildings—meant to optimize staffing levels and resources. About 150 teachers, parents, and students protested outside the meeting, warning that bigger class sizes may lower the quality of education.  Alaska's News Source
