GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Mike Dunleavy declared October as Pedestrian Safety Month—urging Anchorage residents to practice safe driving and walking as Alaska DOT advises pedestrians to wear reflective gear and cross only at legal crossings while drivers stay alert and avoid tinted windows.  Alaska's News Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alaska sports teams competed on Oct.4 in football, volleyball, tennis and cross country events held across the state. Local teams from Palmer, Wrangell and Chugiak posted close scores and standout times—showing a competitive day in sports.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The Alaska Federation held its first state chess tournament—many players vied for the top prize and attempted to break the attendance record. Organizers plan to use the event’s success to expand future tournaments.  Alaska's News Source
  • On Friday night, Bettye Davis East came from behind to beat Dimond 24-20 with strong second-half defense. Bartlett rallied from a halftime deficit to win 15-3 over Colony—clinching a home playoff game.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Former Anchorage product Raythan Robbins returned for a warm homecoming on October 3rd at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex, making 27 saves to help Bemidji State win 9-2 over UAA—he was cheered on by more than 50 family members and friends. Growing up as a Seawolves fan, Robbins said playing among familiar faces from his summer training made the game feel extra special—reminding him of his early days on the ice.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Nearly 100 players competed at the Lakefront Hotel in Anchorage on Saturday in the first state chess tournament aimed at breaking attendance records—Michael Olsta from Fairbanks joined longtime players and shared lessons on the value of face-to-face play.  Alaska's News Source

  • At the state cross country meet held Saturday in Palmer, Bettye Davis East’s Katahdin Staples ran fast at 16:33.16 to win his second straight Division I boys title while South Anchorage took the team prize. Wasilla’s Hailee Giacobbe won the Division I girls race at 19:18.84 and Chugiak girls earned their 5th team title—big wins on a muddy course.  Anchorage Daily News
