COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Linda’s Place, Anchorage’s newest 100-bed homeless shelter, opened recently in a building that once was a strip club and a church—located along East Fifth Avenue near Merrill Field. The shelter, run by MASH LLC, offers separate floors for men and women and a kennel for residents’ pets and is part of a city plan to provide year-round, low-barrier housing options. - ➤ A fire on an exterior balcony at Anchorage Ravenwood Condominiums forced 45 residents to evacuate on Friday with no one hurt—two dogs and three cats died as investigators continue to look into the cause. Your Alaska Link
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Gardening experts advise Anchorage residents to prepare their plots for winter by cutting back annuals and perennials and covering soil with mulch to protect plants from frost. - ➤ The Tlingit and Haida tribes planned a casino-like gambling hall on Douglas Island and began construction, but the U.S. Department of the Interior withdrew a legal opinion that granted tribes jurisdiction over Native allotments. The withdrawal requires a reexamination of their National Indian Gaming Commission approval—federal officials state that allotments remain under state control, placing the project in jeopardy. KTOO
