BUSINESS NEWS

  • Eaglecrest Ski Area began road construction on Aug 6 to build an access route to a gondola station on Douglas Island—parts of the mountain beyond the lodges are now closed to the public. The project is a key step in a plan to use summer revenue to cut a multimillion-dollar deficit, and the gondola is set to operate by summer 2028.  KTOO

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today in Fat Bear Week, two new contenders join the contest as 602, known as Flotato, prepares to battle 128jr while 901 faces 32 Chunk, who competes with a broken jaw—voting is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. AKST.  KTOO
  • Anchorage offers ten local events this weekend with a mix of festivals, community walks and concerts that appeal to many. Today features Alyeska Oktoberfest in Girdwood from 4 to 10 p.m. and Ride the Cyclone at West Anchorage High at 7 p.m., while tomorrow brings Anchorage Vegfest at 10 a.m., a walk to End Alzheimer’s starting at 11:30 a.m. at Westchester Lagoon, the Food and Wine Festival at Hotel Captain Cook at 5:30 p.m., and other shows across town.  Anchorage Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Glenfarne and the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation signed two nonbinding agreements in Italy earlier this month to build momentum for the Alaska LNG Project and will host an open house on Oct. 8 at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.—the event will offer project updates as the team plans a decision by year-end.  KTOO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Dunleavy vetoed Senate Bill 54 on Monday, a measure that would have allowed interior designers to register with the board for large public-use projects—he said it increased costs and confusion without public safety benefits. Sen. Matt Claman said he learned of the decision Tuesday and lawmakers may vote to override it in January.  Alaska's News Source
  • The mayor’s office released version 5 of the TSDO proposal—aimed at easing zoning rules to allow more housing types in select areas—after months of public feedback, and it will hold an open house for further comments in October. Some residents worry that increased density might lead to neighborhood traffic and parking issues.  Alaska Public Media
  • NORAD detected four Russian aircraft in the Alaskan air defense zone on Wednesday—two Tu-95s and two Su-35s—and responded with an E-3, four F-16s, and four KC-135 tankers, though the planes stayed in international airspace.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage drivers are not allowed to use studded tires until Oct. 1 to avoid a $50 fine per tire—Alaska Tire Service has received calls for tire changes as winter nears, and drivers are urged to plan ahead. This restriction does not apply to areas north of Anchorage, where the rules are different.  Alaska's News Source
  • A U.S. District Court judge in Anchorage ruled on Wednesday that the federal decision to use the Staines River as the border for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is valid, leaving 20,000 acres of oil-rich land under federal control and limiting state revenue. Alaska may appeal the ruling within 30 days while federal regulators plan oil and gas leasing—affecting future state finances.  Alaska Beacon
  • Senator Sullivan announced that Alaska received $183.4 million in federal highway funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation to speed up projects such as the West Susitna Access Road and Cooper Landing Bypass — the funds will also support safety and pavement work across the state. HEALTH NEWS

  • Health experts stated that vaccines were accessible in Alaska and that insurance covers CDC-recommended shots while local providers warned that mixed messages from federal agencies and professional groups could confuse residents. Officials advised Alaskans to speak with their healthcare providers—especially as guidelines differ for COVID, flu, RSV, and pneumonia vaccines.  Alaska Public Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former 4-time Iditarod champion Jeff King proposed changes to the 1,000-mile race that would allow the first third to be untimed with a checkpoint at McGrath and reduce the dog limit from 16 to 14—meant to help more mushers finish and lower dog deaths. He sent his proposal to the board and rule committee in April and has not yet received a response.  Alaska Public Media
