  • Molly Blakely turned a $150 food truck venture in Soldotna into a business worth millions that now sells her cookies nationwide on Target—she credits her pioneer parents from the Kenai Peninsula for inspiring her.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new film follows two Alaska Native families seeking justice after loved ones were murdered in 2019 and 1985. It premiered in Anchorage on Sept. 21 and will screen in Homer on Sept. 27 — nationwide on November 1 on PBS.  Alaska's News Source
  • The 2025 Alaska State Fair ended with nearly 389,000 visitors, set new records for livestock and produce, and earned national honors as the 7th-best state fair in USA TODAY’s Readers’ Choice Awards—featuring sold-out concerts and a record livestock auction that raised $742,000. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anchorage public schools will run 'Ride the Cyclone' from Sept. 24 to Sept. 27 after last spring's popular 'Hadestown' sparked a renewed interest in school arts. The cast began rehearsals in early August—promising another exciting contribution to our public arts programs.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Sand Lake Elementary School has refreshed its library with a new quiet reading area, iPads to help kids find books, and a hand-drawn mural by local artist Ted Kim. The renovations were funded by community volunteer Andrew Halcro and his wife and are ongoing as the school plans to survey students for more ideas — creating a space that sparks creativity.  Alaska Public Media

FINANCE NEWS

  • Eligible Alaskans will receive a flat $1,000 payment for 2025 as set by the state Legislature in House Bill 53—over 600,000 residents qualify and electronic payments will start on October 2 while paper filings will be paid on October 23. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Anchorage mayor Dave Bronson filed paperwork with the Alaska Public Offices Commission to run for an office in 2026 — his filing did not state which office he seeks. He resigned as airport director after a seven-month run and joins other officials gearing up for a bid.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage police clarified that riders of e-bikes and scooters must follow rules to protect pedestrians—lower-powered classes can ride on sidewalks except downtown while faster models must be on the road with proper registration, license and insurance. The guidelines also ban electric dirt bikes from all municipal property.  Alaska's News Source
  • On Sept. 22, Rep. Nick Begich introduced a House resolution that used the Congressional Review Act to overturn the Central Yukon Management Plan — the plan managed 13.3 million acres in northern Alaska for over a decade and its repeal may reshape state policies.  Alaska's News Source

  • A project by the Alaska Commission on Aging is gathering stories from locals who reached 100 by making healthy choices and building strong community bonds—veteran John Strong and farm-raised Estelle Moe share advice on staying active and avoiding harmful habits.   • Olympic champion Kikkan Randall from Anchorage is set to be inducted into the U.S. National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame+ the honor comes from her 29 top finishes and an Olympic gold medal win.   • Anchorage residents will soon see the creation of the Iditarod Musher Hall of Fame that will honor six iconic mushers including Rick Swenson, Libby Riddles, Susan Butcher, Martin Buser, Jeff King and Lance Mackey at the Legends of Iditarod Gala in October. The induction will take place at 6 p.m. at the Alaska Aviation Museum—marking a new chapter in Alaska’s sled dog racing history.  Alaska's News Source
