COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The AFD food drive exceeded its goal — organizers collected more donations than expected to help local families and will distribute the surplus to food banks soon.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Anchorage Fire Department raised $102,704 on Fill the Boot day on Aug. 29 when both on-duty and off-duty firefighters set up donation sites at busy intersections to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association—donations can be made online until the end of the year to continue this long-standing tradition.  Alaska's News Source

CRIME NEWS

  • Steve Kroschel, owner of a wildlife center in Haines — who has denied the charges — is facing three felony and two misdemeanor animal cruelty charges after almost 40 animals including bears, moose, and lynx were seized from his property and his arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 8.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday, fans crowned 128’s yearling — offspring of two-time champion Grazer — as the Fat Bear Week Junior champion after it received over 20,000 votes against a nine-month-old cub from 26. The bear, weighing more than 200 pounds and known for its fishing skills, now joins the main bracket with adult contenders to be announced Monday and competition set to begin Tuesday.  Alaska's News Source
  • A new documentary follows two Alaska Native families who have spent five years seeking justice for murdered loved ones—tracking their painful journey through loss and a slow legal process. The film premieres in Anchorage on Sept. 21, in Homer on Sept. 27, and will air on PBS nationwide on Nov. 1.  Alaska Beacon
  • Pew Research’s new study shows that Alaska ranked as the 35th most religious state with only 26% of residents considered highly religious—up from past surveys, more Alaskans now rarely pray or see religion as important.   • At 1 a.m. on Sept 17, the Trans Alaska Pipeline System pumped its 19th billion barrel of crude oil, marking a milestone as it nears its 48th anniversary. Built in three years by more than 28,000 workers, the pipeline remains a crucial part of Alaska's oil industry—engineered by Alyeska.  Must Read Alaska

  • Fish and Game looked for an Anchorage moose with electrical cords tangled in its antlers—this condition raised safety concerns about its risk of being hit by a car due to limited peripheral vision.  Alaska's News Source
  • The state released a new landslide database that shows thousands of past slides to help researchers and local officials understand risk and plan for future hazards. Jillian Nicolazzo from the Landslide Hazards Program said the tool uses data from over 1,000 reports dating back to the 1950s — a finding that will change how Alaska is mapped nationally.  Alaska Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials reported that Alaska's 2024-2025 flu season had 11,900 confirmed cases and 25 deaths, including one child, which marked a higher toll than in past seasons due to low adult vaccination rates. Carrie Edmonson said improved lab reporting and the timing of vaccines may have contributed to the rise—officials urge more residents to get vaccinated.  Alaska Public Media
