CRIME NEWS

  • The Anchorage branch of the NAACP said its members and families were targeted with violent threats for speaking out against white supremacy. The group reported the threats to police and urged local officials to act—warning that without strong action, more harm may follow.  The Alaska Current

  • Anchorage’s Trend Alaska fashion show is holding its final runway event Saturday at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts—doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.; the event features local designers who blend high fashion with Alaska’s cultural style and will support the center while still needing volunteers.  Your Alaska Link

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Anchorage welcomed the last cruise ship of the summer as Mayor Suzanne LaFrance and Visit Anchorage highlighted over 1.3 million visitors and $1 billion spent despite economic uncertainty—one of the best summers on record; the city will attract 2 more cruise ships next summer to build on this success.  Your Alaska Link

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Alaska Anchorage reported a 6% enrollment increase this fall, the largest growth in over a decade, which UAA Provost Denise Runge described as significant — a boost as nearby districts have helped attract more full-time and younger students.   • Sand Lake Elementary School Library was redesigned thanks to a generous benefactor who funded new books that reflect current events—students now show more enthusiasm when they see titles that represent them.  Alaska's News Source
  • Alaskans 4 Personal Freedom will host a conference on October 11 at the University of Alaska Anchorage's Wendy Williamson Auditorium that offers insights on healthcare, education, artificial intelligence and economic freedom—experts will share new perspectives and answer pressing questions during the event, which costs $55 with lunch included.  Must Read Alaska
  • Thomas More Classical School in Anchorage will open Fall 2026 with grades K-6 using the Hillsdale College K-12 program to offer a classical and Christian education—if community interest supports grades 7 and 8, additional grades will be added next year. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck east of the Kamchatka Peninsula Thursday morning and triggered a tsunami advisory for the western Aleutians from Amchitka Pass to Attu. Waves are estimated to reach Shemya by 12:25 p.m.—officials are monitoring for any further impacts.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Alaska Air National Guard’s 176th Wing conducted three rescues on Monday, saving five people—one hunter with a medical emergency, two aircraft passengers with minor injuries, and two hikers stranded near Bear Mountain—across 550 miles. The unit flew patients to hospitals and used hoisting for the hikers as part of its year-round training in Alaska’s challenging terrain.  Your Alaska Link
