COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Anchorage officials said events at Town Square Park cut crime this summer as police calls dropped to about half of last summer’s numbers. City leaders said upgrades—more cameras and brighter lights—will start in 2026 to keep the park safe.  Alaska Public Media
  • As winter approaches, Anchorage residents are starting home maintenance work to prepare for cold temperatures. Jason Kalai from Central Plumbing and Heating said homeowners should change air filters and check insulation—especially in older homes to keep pipes from freezing.  Your Alaska Link

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Atka Dancers have revived Unangax̂ dance in the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands by teaching young people its songs and steps in culture camps and at a festival held in Unalaska in August—Mike Swetzof said he started the troupe in 1996 after seeing a dance in Russia.  Alaska Public Media
  • Anchorage will host the final 2025 Trend Alaska Fashion Show this weekend as it concludes a celebrated run featuring Alaska’s top designers and artists—organizers said the event will showcase final collections.  Alaska's News Source
  • Student artist Sarah Cornils will finish her drawing degree at UAA this year and plans to launch her creative career using mixed media techniques. She works for a nonprofit and shares her vibrant art through PaintedPeaks — a project that reflects her abstract style and love for landscapes.  The Alaska Current

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anchorage School District announced that the federal government cancelled a $3.3M grant for career and technical education, effective Sept. 30, and the district may appeal the decision within seven days. Administrators said they will reallocate resources — keeping six teacher positions—to ensure students in career classes are not impacted.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Anchorage International Airport began a two-year study to measure jet noise in nearby neighborhoods including Sand Lake, Turnagain, and Spenard and to update its noise map from 2015. Data from summer measurements will be compared to fall tests to find areas where noise averages 65 dB or above so homes there may qualify for federal funding—public input is welcome at an early January meeting.  Alaska's News Source
  • Alaska Attorney General Stephen Cox asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to review the state's challenge to federal salmon management along a 180-mile stretch of the Kuskokwim River through the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. The state is in conflict with Alaska Native groups who say the move endangers subsistence fishing—raising concerns for rural residents.  Anchorage Daily News
  • An Anchorage landlord filed a complaint with the State Ombudsman over overpayments from AHFC’s Housing Voucher Program—one instance causing a $10,068 loss—and requested an audit of its accounting practices for not following ALTA rules.   • Alaska filed a petition with the U.S. Supreme Court—asking if rural Alaskans can keep special fishing rights on most rivers and lakes in federal parks, preserves and reserves—and state officials said they believe federal law lets the state manage its waters.
