ECONOMY NEWS

  • Canada-based Teck Resources and United Kingdom-based Anglo American plan to merge into Anglo Teck, which will take over Red Dog mine if regulatory approval comes through. The new company is expected to keep current operations and explore new zinc sources to extend the mine's life.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Major oil projects on the North Slope are well underway, with the Pikka project running ahead of schedule and set to produce oil in the first quarter next year—expected to bring in more than $200 million to help ease Alaska’s stretched budget.  Alaska Public Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Anchorage School Superintendent said the district will need extra funds to prevent backsliding — lowering class sizes is an urgent challenge that requires hiring more teachers.  Alaska's News Source
  • On Sept. 10, the U.S. Department of Education announced it cut millions in federal grants for schools serving Alaska Native students, putting key support services and degree programs at risk at institutions like UAF. University officials say the loss of Title III funding may force program changes, and universities have up to a year to close out the affected programs — a decision they expect will impact service delivery.  Alaska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During a weekend outage that disrupted 911 calls from 5:30 p.m. Friday to 11:12 p.m. Saturday, Anchorage dispatchers used a workaround to call back at least 220 people—police advised using the 311 non-emergency number if 911 remains unavailable.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Anchorage officials are proposing two new ordinances to fix the housing shortage by allowing more small, safe movable units in mobile home parks and easing repair rules for older homes — measures aimed at preserving low-cost housing — as the proposals move through the Planning and Zoning Commission for a potential fall review.  Anchorage Daily News
  • State lawmakers voted nine to two to allow spending up to $100,000 to file a lawsuit challenging Gov. Dunleavy’s executive order to form a cabinet-level Department of Agriculture. The suit will challenge his use of an order during a special session instead of following the normal legislative process—lawmakers say his actions break the rule.  Alaska's News Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • The FBI is aware of a data breach at an Anchorage health clinic—hackers claim that 60K patient records have been impacted and an investigation is underway.  Alaska's News Source
  • The FBI confirmed it is aware of a data breach at Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center after a hacker group claimed nearly 60,000 patient records were exposed. The health center took its systems offline and began a forensic investigation while working with cybersecurity experts—law enforcement was also notified.  Alaska's News Source

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Iditarod Trail Committee announced that its first Musher Hall of Fame induction will take place on October 23 at the Alaska Aviation Museum to honor race pioneers, champions, and canine heroes—only 200 tickets are available with proceeds supporting the race, canine care, and educational programs.  Your Alaska Link
