CULTURE NEWS

  • Katmai National Park will host Fat Bear Week from September 23 to September 30 as brown bears will bulk up at Brooks Falls for a bracket-style contest. Fans will vote online for their favorite bear in this annual competition organized by the National Park Service and explore.org—drawing global attention to the pre-hibernation spectacle.  Must Read Alaska

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists and state agencies are tracking Alaska landslides driven by warming weather and thawing permafrost, which claimed lives near Wrangell in 2023 and have delayed bridge work at Denali. Researchers will seek more federal funding and use a new app to record public sightings—helping communities prepare as risks grow.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Scientists are researching whether an earthquake early warning system can alert Alaska residents sooner—potentially giving them crucial seconds to seek safety as the Alaska Earthquake Center studies systems used in California, Oregon and other countries. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In 1946, Government Hill residents met to demand clear city limits as rapid growth created confusion over civic services and taxes. At a June 5 meeting, the city attorney confirmed the neighborhood was part of Anchorage—resolving a long-standing local debate.  Anchorage Daily News
  • A partnership between Alaska Community Foundation and local radio stations raised $3.5M to help cover a $15M gap after Congress cut federal funds for public media. Station leaders have already begun reducing programs and will distribute funds from 80 donors next month—further cuts could follow if newer contributions do not come in.  Anchorage Daily News
  • On September 14th, Bartlett beat Service in a close race that went back and forth until the end — the win may change local government as officials plan next steps. Voters watched as the contest unfolded in a hard-fought battle that left few doubts about the result.  Alaska's News Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medical expert Michelle Rein at Mayo Clinic Health System advises Anchorage parents to choose light backpacks with extra pockets, wide padded straps and a waist belt so children avoid back, shoulder and neck pain. She says kids should carry no more than 15% of their body weight and wear both straps—improper use causes uneven load distribution—and check for reflective material if they walk or bike to school.  Anchorage Daily News

  • High school football games this past weekend featured dramatic wins as Bartlett beat Service in triple overtime and Dimond earned their first win on a wet field - Palmer outscored Eagle River with 24 unanswered points in a rainy contest.   • Local cross-country runners battled muddy trails at a recent meet while high school football teams completed week 5 games—Palmer won in a rout of Eagle River, Dimond beat Colony and Bartlett upended Service.
