  • Anchorage is gearing up for the annual Great Alaska Duck Race this weekend—thousands of rubber ducks will race down Ship Creek to mark the event.  Alaska's News Source
  • Theresa Brown started a free farm stand to offer fresh produce and cooking samples to Anchorage residents in need, with donations from local farmers and gardeners. The stand, open Tuesday afternoons in Fairview and Wednesdays in Spenard, received over 2,000 pounds of produce—volunteers keep the friendly atmosphere, and it will close for the season on Tuesday with plans to return next summer.  Alaska Public Media

  • Starting the week of October 5, Northern Air Cargo will launch a direct air-cargo route from Seattle to Anchorage — flights will leave Seattle on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and reach Anchorage the next mornings to serve rural communities including Nome, Kotzebue, Utqiagvik and Bethel. Businesses will benefit from same-day freshness and a climate-controlled system that transports fresh seafood and crucial supplies.  Must Read Alaska

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rain in Portage Valley has raised concerns that an old landslide near Portage Lake might dump rocks into the water, risking a 50-foot local tsunami—officials have noted recent images of movement and increased rain. The U.S. Forest Service has pulled staff from the Begich Boggs Visitor Center and Portage Glacier Cruises canceled weekend tours as more rain is forecast through the weekend.  Alaska's News Source
  • Scientists are tracking landslide risks caused by warming and thawing permafrost that may harm roads and homes. Local and federal agencies are reviewing funding and improving alerts as new technology and public reports help spot these hazards—officials say more work is needed to keep people safe.  KTOO
  • Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey and other agencies have launched a program at Barry Arm to watch for landslides that might trigger a tsunami in Prince William Sound.   • On September 12th, AFD Wildfire Division project manager Stephanie Dufek discussed the department’s wildfire response survey and reported what locals observed about recent fires — findings that will guide future response plans.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage police reported a statewide 911 outage and advised residents to call 311 or 9077868900 to reach emergency dispatch while the system remains down. Officials said the cause is unknown and they are monitoring the situation.  Alaska's News Source
