Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 7th of September.
Good morning, Anchorage.
🎭 Culture
In 1897, Seattle Post-Intelligencer reporter Samuel Weston sent 12 carrier pigeons from the gold rush steamer Portland to deliver news, but harsh weather and long distances delayed their arrival.
This quirky experiment remains a memorable part of Alaska history (most pigeons never made it).
🏛️ Government
After nearly 3 decades at the agency, NTSB chief Clint Johnson, who investigated over 1000 accidents (including high-profile crashes), retired to spend more time with his family.
Johnson expects major changes in aviation safety as his team continues work on improving flight protocols.
The government transferred ownership of the Alaska Native Medical Center to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium on Aug.
24, ending years of shared management. The consortium plans a $462 million expansion to add emergency department beds and meeting spaces, and patient care and employee roles remain unchanged.
