Good morning, Anchorage. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 6th of September.

CRIME NEWS

  • A 25-year-old Village Police Officer in Brevig Mission was arrested on multiple felony charges after he allegedly used his badge to intimidate his ex-girlfriend by conducting a false traffic stop and sending threatening texts—he remains in custody and will face a preliminary hearing on September 15 in Nome.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center is hosting Big Bears Big Veggies today—its annual event where resident brown bears will eat giant pumpkins, cabbage and squash from HarvestFest and local growers. Visitors can preview the vegetables on Friday or watch the event livestream online.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Alaska Aerospace is planning to expand its Pacific Test Range from Kodiak to the Aleutians—adding fixed telemetry sites and a possible spaceport at Adak to support future hypersonic tests and orbital launches. Interested contractors will have until late September to submit responses as the state-owned corporation prepares for increased space activity.  Alaska Public Media
  • Anchorage officials told Data for Indigenous Justice they would not provide names of Indigenous homicide victims because their records do not track these cases. This decision leaves a key data gap for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People campaign — raising concerns that public promises to address violence may be more performative than effective.  Alaska Public Media
  • Earlier this week, the U.S. Coast Guard watched two Chinese research ships in a disputed part of the Arctic Ocean more than 200 miles from Utqiagvik—an area the U.S. claims as part of its longer sea area even though other nations do not back this claim. The Coast Guard used an icebreaker and a patrol plane to check on the ships and keep the border safe.  Alaska Beacon
