Good morning, Anchorage. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 4th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A new homeless shelter named Linda’s Place opened along 5th Avenue in Anchorage to help unhoused neighbors before winter arrives. Owned by MASH Property Management LLC, the facility — once a strip club and later a church — is already housing dozens and plans to expand to 100 beds by the end of the week.  Your Alaska Link

CRIME NEWS

  • An Eagle River man who helped disarm two firearms during a brawl at the Alaska State Fair on Labor Day spoke for the first time, saying he would do it again every time if needed—his story comes as local officials review the incident.  Alaska's News Source

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Anchorage schools are starting new safety measures that include standardized emergency protocols and randomized metal detectors to deter potential threats; the system categorizes responses from mild incidents to active shooter situations and is set to begin today. Administrators note that schools like West Anchorage High (which has 1700 students) and others will use the detectors after minimal delay (staff training was completed over the summer) to keep class routines undisturbed.  Anchorage Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Early on Sept. 3, video footage showed a standoff between a bear and a moose near Anchorage. Officials did not offer further details on the incident or any safety measures being implemented.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials will open bids this fall to replace the aging ferry Tustumena that many Aleutian communities depend on, but progress is slowed by a rule requiring 70% of spending to go to American-made parts — a regulation that has delayed the project. The replacement, originally planned for 2027, is now expected to begin by the end of 2028 as bids are reviewed.  Alaska Public Media
  • Yesterday, the House passed House Joint Resolution 106—introduced by Congressman Nick Begich—to overturn the Bureau of Land Management’s Central Yukon Resource Management Plan that had restricted development over 56 million acres; the move clears the way for a 211-mile industrial road that will allow new access to the Ambler Mining District. Senate lawmakers will now decide whether to reject the plan, a decision that could set a precedent for managing Alaska’s resources in the future.  Must Read Alaska

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today the Alaska Department of Health released its fall vaccine update that follows federal guidance for the flu, RSV and Covid-19 season—urging everyone six months and older to get the flu shot and directing providers to remove outdated Covid vaccines as the FDA approved new ones and revoked older versions. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will meet on September 18–19 to finalize new Covid shot recommendations—while some medical groups have offered alternate guidance.  Must Read Alaska
