COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at Chilkoot Charlie's parking lot, the Support Dollars for Dogs fundraiser will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise money for a local nonprofit and for the Anchorage Police Department's K-9 Unit, with free hot dogs and doggie bags and cooling vests available for dogs.  Alaska's News Source

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The National Transportation Safety Board released its preliminary report on the fatal Dillingham plane crash that killed wildlife biologist John Landsiedel on July 25th, 2025 when his Piper J3C-65 Cub lost power during a touch-and-go landing—resulting in a stall and a crash on the airport runway.  Alaska's News Source

  • At the Alaska State Fair on Friday, News Source team members Justin Mattson and meteorologist Bailey Braun tossed rings in the games area—a playful moment during the fair's final weekend that added a local touch to the festivities.  Alaska's News Source

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A young Alaska Native engineer from Kongiganak named Charitie Ropati has been appointed as a youth climate advisor to the United Nations — she will work with international advisors for the next three years to ensure Indigenous voices guide global climate action.  KTOO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The FAA said it will reopen bidding on a contract to build a new air traffic control tower at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport — earlier bids were too high. The project will include a replacement tower and radar tracking facility to upgrade operations and improve safety amid increasing cargo traffic.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Jane Angvik, one of the architects of Anchorage’s charter, said unification 50 years ago not only set rules for land use and taxes but also helped the community respond better to disasters—she explained that working together led to a government capable of serving a growing population, and the charter will be celebrated next month.   Alaska Public Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Anchorage community members gathered today to build Naloxone kits for communities across Alaska in preparation for International Overdose Awareness Day on August 31. Health officials noted that the number of kits increased from 1,800 to 46,000 last year—an effort aimed at reducing overdose deaths.  Your Alaska Link
