CRIME NEWS
- ➤ 62-year-old Kyoung Soo Seo and 36-year-old Chantel Lynn Fields, the owner and manager of the Chelsea Inn Hotel in Spenard, pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court before Magistrate Judge Kyle Reardon after the hotel was raided for alleged drug distribution—Fields remains in jail pending a detention hearing next Friday while Seo was released on pretrial conditions. - ➤ American fighter jets intercepted a Russian IL-20 surveillance aircraft Tuesday in Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone for the fifth time in one week, and NORAD said the plane flew for 2 hours 20 minutes near Shemya Island without entering U.S. airspace. The interception occurred when the Russian aircraft remained in international airspace, following a series of similar incursions. Anchorage Daily News
- ➤ Governor Dunleavy appointed Stephen J. Cox as Alaska's attorney general on August 28th. Cox (a former U.S. Attorney with the Department of Justice) brings valuable federal experience to the role. Your Alaska Link
- ➤ Scientists say an earthquake early warning system could give more than 10 seconds notice for areas like Sand Point and up to 20 seconds for King Cove after the recent M7.3 quake, but building this network in remote and harsh terrain will cost $66 million upfront—plus $12 million each year for maintenance. Experts at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and USGS are studying the plan to secure federal or private funding to bring the system to our state. Alaska Public Media
- ➤ Data for Indigenous Justice asked the Department of Public Safety for a list of Alaska Native homicide victims, but the agency said it does not collect that data—claiming it would take hours to compile the records—and refused the request.
