GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • American fighter jets intercepted a Russian IL-20 surveillance aircraft Tuesday in Alaska’s Air Defense Identification Zone for the fifth time in one week, and NORAD said the plane flew for 2 hours 20 minutes near Shemya Island without entering U.S. airspace. • Scientists say an earthquake early warning system could give more than 10 seconds notice for areas like Sand Point and up to 20 seconds for King Cove after the recent M7.3 quake, but building this network in remote and harsh terrain will cost $66 million upfront—plus $12 million each year for maintenance. Experts at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and USGS are studying the plan to secure federal or private funding to bring the system to our state.  Alaska Public Media
  • Data for Indigenous Justice asked the Department of Public Safety for a list of Alaska Native homicide victims, but the agency said it does not collect that data—claiming it would take hours to compile the records—and refused the request.
