GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal trial began Monday in Anchorage for a class-action lawsuit that alleges Alaska’s Office of Children’s Services has risked foster children by overloading caseworkers and neglecting required monthly visits - former foster youth recounted frequent moves, missed school and abuse, and officials cited challenges such as worker shortages and remote communities. The trial is set to continue for three weeks as state officials work on reforming the system.  Alaska Public Media
  • Anchorage officials are asking for public feedback on a proposed Transit Supported Development Overlay that could let property owners add taller buildings and small businesses near busy roads. The plan—which seeks to ease zoning rules for more housing and mixed use—will be revised after more community meetings, amid some local opposition.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Anchorage’s Mario Chalmers hit a game-winning three pointer to give Miami 305 a 52 to 48 win in the BIG3 championship Sunday night—his shot earned him a $1 million bonus and added to his legacy as a champion. NFL cuts on Tuesday left only Tyree Wilson safe—Anchorage’s Brandon Pili and Bills’ Edefuan Ulofoshio were cut while Aiden Williams missed games due to a knee injury.  Anchorage Daily News
