ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 22-year-old airman, Tatyana A. Salceda from St. Louis, died in a vehicle-related incident at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson around 2 p.m. on August 13—officials said final reports are pending.  Anchorage Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Seven months after an underwater fiber-optic cable broke near Prudhoe Bay from an ice scour, two vessels off Wainwright will begin repairs that are expected to restore high-speed internet by the end of the summer season. Quintillion plans to add a backup fiber ring and start a new overland cable between Prudhoe Bay and Utqiagvik—steps meant to help stop future outages.  Alaska Public Media

CRIME NEWS

  • Alaska federal prosecutors charged Ethan Foltz, a 22-year-old from Oregon, on Tuesday with running the 'Rapper Bot' network — a botnet that launched cyberattacks in 80 countries and briefly disrupted social media X while agents executed a search warrant at his home.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Kenai jurors convicted former Soldotna High teacher Nathaniel Erfurth on 28 counts of aggravated sexual abuse and unlawful exploitation of a minor from a trial that ended on August 12, and he will face a sentencing hearing on Dec. 11 with a potential prison term of five to 15 years per count—details that underscore the gravity of his actions.  KBRW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Coast Guard commissioned the Earl Cunningham in Kodiak last week — the second of three 154-foot fast response cutters built to operate in the Aleutians and Bering Sea. The third cutter, the Frederick Mann, will arrive in Kodiak in the coming months.  Alaska Public Media
  • Sen. Dan Sullivan said increased Chinese and Russian incursions near Alaska have made a stronger military presence a priority as he hosted top U.S. officials at American Legion Jack Henry Post 1. The joint training exercises Northern Edge and Arctic Edge will include over 6,400 servicemembers, 100 aircraft and various vessels—boosting defense readiness in cold weather areas.  Alaska's News Source
