CULTURE NEWS

  • Rev. Judith W. Lethin’s memoir tells her journey from a hard childhood in rural Alaska to her work with the Episcopal Church and Native communities. ECONOMY NEWS

  • King salmon nearly disappeared from the Kenai River last summer, compressing the fishing season while a record sockeye run attracted more families and seasoned anglers and increased pressure on river access and local infrastructure. Local guides restructured trips and raised prices, and operators are planning upgrades to meet demand—while many hope king salmon will eventually return.  Anchorage Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A petition to relist gray whales under the Endangered Species Act has been filed with NOAA by retired marine conservation professor Rick Steiner, who said the whale count is now about 13,000 due to low calf numbers and poor summer feeding conditions. NOAA has 90 days to decide whether to start the public notice process for a rule change amid concerns over the species’ decline.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the Alaska GOP quarterly meeting, party officers unanimously endorsed US Sen. Dan Sullivan, Congressman Nick Begich, and Eagle River Rep. Jamie Allard for reelection—no vote was taken for US Sen. Lisa Murkowski. GOP legislators, mostly from the Mat-Su Valley, noted that lawmakers who supported overriding the governor’s veto were absent and Sen. Jesse Bjorkman left after his effort to stop a censure vote failed.  Must Read Alaska

HEALTH NEWS

  • HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. met with the Alaska Native Health Board and Senators Murkowski and Sullivan in Anchorage on August 5 to discuss tribal rights, Medicaid rules, and vaccine policy. Kennedy said he will work with Interior and Agriculture to remove barriers to food sovereignty—he also announced ending over $500 million in mRNA vaccine projects to fund research for universal vaccines for flu and Covid-19.  Must Read Alaska

SPORTS NEWS

  • Sports results from Aug. 9 showed that high school baseball games ended with scores like Gillette 22 to Service 3 and Fort Collins 11 to Service 3—local runners also posted finish times in races such as the Violence Free Community Run 5K and the Christopher Walden Hilltop 5K. The scoreboard listed times and placements for athletes from areas including Anchorage, Sterling, Kenai and Wasilla.  Anchorage Daily News
