ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A local was attacked by a brown bear near Barbara Falls in Eagle River on Saturday around 10 a.m. and was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, a park ranger said.  Alaska's News Source

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Furie Operating Alaska LLC has renamed its Cook Inlet drilling platform from Julius to Allegra Leigh Platform—named after the owners’ first granddaughter—and is using the Spartan 151 jack-up rig to drill new wells in the nearly 83,400-acre Kitchen Lights Unit. The move will boost local natural gas production as demand grows and older fields wind down.  Must Read Alaska

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Dunleavy allowed three bills to become law this week by taking no action, eliminating DMV registration for active fishing boats and letting commercial fishing cooperatives form their own insurance pools + lowering classroom training requirements for new accountants + aligning state accounting rules with model legislation.  Alaska Beacon
  • A state emergency operations center worker mistakenly sent a wireless alert test message to cellphones that had opted in on Wednesday afternoon—only those who enabled test messages received it. Head of operations Mark Roberts said the error happened when the operator accidentally selected the wireless alert test along with the regular weekly test.  Alaska Beacon
  • On Friday, July 25, the Coast Guard intercepted a Chinese government icebreaker operating 130 nautical miles inside the US Extended Continental Shelf+290 nautical miles north of Utqiagvik, and a C-130J Hercules from Kodiak was deployed+as part of Operation Frontier Sentinel to monitor rising Chinese activity in the Arctic.  Must Read Alaska
  • The Alaska Bar Association board of governors will meet via Zoom on Aug. 21 to vote on recommending disbarment for former federal judge Joshua Kindred — he resigned in 2024 after investigators revealed he had engaged in misconduct.  Anchorage Daily News
