- ➤ Anchorage Animal Care and Control launched Tails on Trails to let shelter dogs spend time outside the facility with people who may adopt them—participants 18 or older can foster a dog for 48 hours. Your Alaska Link
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Federal investigators said that on Sept. 12, 2023 the plane near St. Mary’s carrying hunters and moose meat became overloaded by 6% and had unapproved moose antlers installed on its right wing strut—factors that caused the aircraft to lose control during takeoff amid turbulence and crash, killing pilot Eugene “Buzzy” Peltola. - ➤ Anchorage Pelmeni reopened for indoor seating today after its storefront was hit by a speeding truck last April—workers had served the restaurant in a pop-up tent until repairs were completed. Manager Lester Hayes said the restaurant will fix the ceiling and restore its record player to create a more welcoming space. Alaska's News Source

- ➤ Rachel Stauffer said her family seeks answers after her son died in a hit-and-run crash on Sunday near Arlington Drive and West Northern Lights Boulevard when his motorcycle collided with a white GMC truck that fled the scene, and Anchorage police said the investigation is ongoing. - ➤ Anchorage will host a busy weekend with a summer celebration at Alaska Rock Gym on Saturday from 3 to 9 p.m. featuring 30 climbing routes and a parking lot party starting at 5:30 p.m., a free Disability Pride Celebration at Delaney Park Strip from noon to 4 p.m., and a Switchfoot concert at Town Square Park with doors open at 5 p.m. and a headliner at 8:30 p.m.—all set to offer diverse activities. In addition, today there is a punk and hardcore night at Club Nyt Lyt at 7:30 p.m. with $15 tickets, while the Mountain View Street Fair holds a community dance with a music festival starting at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, and the Plein Air Weekend runs from Saturday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.—ticket prices and free entry vary by event. - ➤ Alaska filed an appeal with the U.S. Department of Education after officials said the state failed a funding disparity test—putting more than $80.8 million of federal Impact Aid at risk. Education Commissioner Deena Bishop said the 2024 data shows the state meets the requirements and that school districts will continue to receive funding during the appeal process. Alaska Beacon

- ➤ The EPA upheld its veto of the proposed Pebble Mine project in southwest Alaska while Northern Dynasty continues to sue to overturn the decision after settlement talks failed. Alaska Public Media
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Two fishing bills became law without Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s signature on Thursday. The bills—sponsored by Rep. Louise Stutes—reduce registration requirements for commercial fishing vessels, lower insurance costs for active fishermen and repeal a derelict vessel fund that returns $1.4 million to the general fund, with the changes taking effect October 22. - ➤ Last week, Sen. Dan Sullivan and Rep. Nick Begich voted to defund NPR and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting—removing $30 million that had been approved for Alaska’s 27 public radio stations.
