  • Anchorage Police Department is doubling its presence on the 700th block of 4th Avenue in downtown Anchorage — following a fatal shooting over the weekend.  Alaska's News Source
  • Anchorage police are seeking a driver who fled a fatal hit-and-run crash on Sunday night near Arlington Drive and West Northern Lights Boulevard — the collision between a motorcycle and a white GMC pickup resulted in the death of rider Christian Islas-Stauffer — anyone with information is urged to come forward.  Your Alaska Link

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A report from Ocean Conservancy released July 23 showed Alaska’s ocean trash is mostly broken fishing nets, lines, ropes and buoys—items swept in by ocean currents. The study highlighted that coastal communities face challenges in properly disposing of debris and urged stronger policies to manage plastic waste.  Alaska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former state Rep. David Eastman won his lawsuit against Gov. Mike Dunleavy and the state when a judge ruled Senate Bill 189 void for violating the single-subject clause—he was awarded $20,250 in fees and costs. Lawmakers later re-passed the combined bills as a new law, narrowing the ruling's impact on future legislation.  KTOO
  • Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance announced that five local grant recipients will share $100,000 to support new public art projects under the Beyond the Beige initiative. The projects include a new mural on the historic McKinley Tower and an outdoor art gallery on 4th & G Street — plans that will add color to downtown.  Your Alaska Link

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Department of Health retracted its earlier estimate that Medicaid spending could drop by up to $500 million a year from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act after discovering the figure relied on outdated models. Officials now are reassessing the impact of new exemptions and will apply for waivers to delay work requirements to 2029.  KBRW

  • Anchorage Bucs beat the Mat-Su Miners by a score of 4 to 3 on Tuesday at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer, forcing a final game on Wednesday. Coach Joe Silva praised strong pitching and timely hitting for the comeback effort as the team kept its title defense hopes alive.  Anchorage Daily News
