  • Anchorage officials broke ground at Johnny Ellis Jr. Park today as a $100,000 bond measure funded upgrades to make the park more accessible for all community members—located next to the new tiny homes community at 15th and A Street.  Your Alaska Link

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The NTSB said that on Sept. 12, 2023, a small Piper plane crashed in rural Alaska because it was overloaded with moose meat and antlers—making it about 6% over its weight limit—and these issues led to the fatal accident of Eugene ‘Buzzy’ Peltola Jr. during a hunting trip.  Alaska's News Source
  • A brown bear mauled a woman hiking on Dome Trail Tuesday afternoon and responders from multiple agencies took about an hour to locate her before using a helicopter to transport her to an Anchorage hospital for treatment where her injuries were serious but not life-threatening.  Alaska Public Media

CRIME NEWS

  • Bar owners and staff near Fourth Avenue in downtown Anchorage reacted to a Sunday morning shooting outside Gaslight Lounge that left 23-year-old Leroy Manogiamanu dead, three others injured and two security guards shot—staff say the violence has hurt nearby business.  Alaska's News Source

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Alaska State Fair and Alaska Railroad will run the Fair Train on Aug. 29-31 with two round trips each day from the Anchorage depot to the South Palmer depot—departing at 12:30 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. from Anchorage and returning at 6:45 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. Tickets will be available starting July 31 at 9 a.m.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The Alaska State Fair train will run two round trips daily at Palmer fairgrounds from Aug. 29 to Aug. 31 during the fair. Sales open on July 31 at 9 a.m. on the Alaska Railroad website — the ride offers scenic views and lets fairgoers skip parking and traffic delays.  Alaska's News Source
