CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Adam Daniel Fleischman pleaded guilty to murdering his wife in 2021 and was sentenced to 45 years in prison — with an additional 20 years suspended — by Anchorage Superior Court; if released, he will serve 10 years on supervised probation. Alaska's News Source
- ➤ Anchorage police identified Utuva Alaelua as the man fatally shot in an officer-involved incident after pulling him over for a broken headlight near the 300 block of Bragaw Street in Mountain View. Alaska's News Source
- ➤ Anchorage police said the shooting outside the Gaslight Lounge at about 2:50 a.m. left 23-year-old Leroy Manogiamanu dead, with three others injured and a fourth victim later found; the suspect remains at large—officers processed the scene near downtown headquarters. Must Read Alaska
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A record 30 students began the WWAMI program this month (the largest cohort to date) at the University of Alaska Anchorage campus before moving on to the University of Washington School of Medicine. The program, which offers Alaska’s only in-state path to a medical degree (expanded after a state funding increase raised enrollment from 20 to 30), marks a turnaround in its history. - ➤ Alaska’s Division of Public Assistance is still dealing with a backlog of benefit claims, leaving thousands waiting for SNAP, Medicaid, and other support. State officials are hiring more staff — but delays persist as processing times remain longer than required. KTOO
- ➤ Alaskans for Fair Courts will file a lawsuit against Gov. Mike Dunleavy tomorrow alleging that his appointment of John W. Wood to the judge-nominating board violates the constitution—Wood is said to be ineligible because he is a former attorney and held a state contract when appointed in May. The suit asks Anchorage Superior Court to void Wood’s appointment and maintain a balanced judicial selection process. Alaska's News Source
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Alaska signed on to a national settlement with Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family and will receive up to $12.2 million over 15 years plus about $1.8 million from another settlement, with the funds going to rehab programs for those with substance problems — state officials said the money will support treatment as the state works to fight the opioid crisis. More resources are needed to help those affected by the epidemic. Alaska Public Media
