CRIME NEWS

  • A 45-year-old man with neo-Nazi tattoos who fled Parkview Center has been captured and is now held at Anchorage Correctional Complex on charges of armed robbery and felony escape (he has petitioned to change his name to Vincent Synister Calderon).  Must Read Alaska
  • Anchorage police apprehended a man on Friday near Mulcahy Stadium after shots were fired, leading to street and trail closures and the evacuation of a baseball field—he had an active warrant from Kotzebue and was taken to a hospital after a police dog bit his leg.  Anchorage Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 64th annual World Eskimo and Indian Olympics ended Saturday—four days of sports and contests brought athletes from across the state to compete in traditional events such as the four man carry and Miss WEIO pageant. Organizers said the event showed strong cultural traditions and record performances that will help keep these customs alive for future generations.  Alaska's News Source

  • Anchorage utility executives say bills may rise by 4% soon because a warm winter led to lower sales — the board is set to vote later this month on the change to keep the credit rating needed for future low-cost loans — experts note that winters are expected to keep warming.  Alaska Beacon

  • The University of Alaska Fairbanks has named retired Ambassador Mike Sfraga, Ph.D., as interim chancellor and he will assume the role on July 28 after Chancellor Dan White retires at the end of the month—UAF will share more details on the search for a permanent chancellor in August.  Must Read Alaska

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former US Rep. Mary Peltola filed a civil lawsuit in Bethel Superior Court on Friday, seeking damages possibly linked to the plane crash that killed her husband during a moose hunting trip along the Yukon River in 2023. The suit names defendant Bruce Werba— a registered hunting guide— as well as Alaska Pike Safari’s and Wilderness Adventures LLC and Neitz Aviation.  Must Read Alaska
  • Alaskans for Fair Courts filed a lawsuit in Anchorage Superior Court alleging Governor Mike Dunleavy violated the constitution by appointing John W. Wood to a non-attorney seat on the Alaska Judicial Council—Wood is a former attorney who held a state role and has not been confirmed by the Legislature, making his appointment allegedly ineligible.  Alaska Beacon
