COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Town Square Park — a central downtown spot — comes alive each Friday from 5 to 8:30 p.m. as the Anchorage Summer Night Market brings vendors, music and food together; the event will run through Aug. 29 with help from the Department of Parks and Recreation.  Anchorage Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Anchorage School District cut 34.5 full-time positions and let go of five educators when it lost 14 million dollars from its budget due to a federal funding freeze—most affected staff were moved to other roles. Parents and educators worry the cuts will hurt student support, especially for those with special needs.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Congressman Nick Begich raised over $800,000 in the second quarter of 2025, setting a new record for off-year fundraising for an Alaska House candidate and leaving his campaign with more than $1.25 million cash on hand—boosting his competitive edge. His campaign outpaced past benchmarks, including those set by former Representative Mary Peltola.  Must Read Alaska
  • Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case said he expects calls to rise—at least initially—after the Assembly passed an ordinance making camping near trails, schools, playgrounds and streets a misdemeanor. He said officers will use specialized units to connect unsheltered individuals to services while a public dashboard will track the ordinance’s impact, even as some Assembly members worry there is no safe legal camping option.  Alaska's News Source
  • The Alaska Department of Law announced Tuesday a new process that lets citizens ask for investigative grand juries to examine suspected misconduct by public officials.
