CULTURE NEWS

  • Erin Ggaadimits Ivalu Gingrich, a Koyukon Dené and Iñupiaq artist from Anchorage, was selected as one of five Native artists for the prestigious 2025 Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship — which offers her a $50,000 cash award and an exhibition in Indianapolis from November to February — and she uses subsistence research to inspire carvings that honor Alaska Native traditions. Her work will be featured in upcoming exhibitions that highlight her deep connection to the land.  Anchorage Daily News

  • Anchorage School District Superintendent Dr. Jharrett Bryantt sent a scathing letter Tuesday warning staff and families about impending layoffs and reassignments due to a federal grant freeze and trimmed state budget increases — his letter cited the elimination of 42 central office positions and urged action ahead of the Aug 2 special session.  Must Read Alaska

  • Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance celebrated cleaning up Davis Park in Mountain View—using a trash grabber tool and empty garbage bag after crews removed 744,000 pounds of debris from the area—and residents noted that new encampments appeared on Delaney Park Strip as the Assembly discussed a camping ordinance at Loussac Library on Tuesday.  Must Read Alaska
  • Twenty-three state legislators sent a letter Tuesday urging U.S. Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan to oppose cuts to public broadcasting that could harm Alaska's rural communities. The Senate will vote on the rescission package by Friday — a decision that many fear may lead to program cuts and layoffs at local stations.  Alaska Beacon
  • The Anchorage Assembly will revisit the proposed camping ban on public lands at its Tuesday meeting after nearly four hours of public comments at a special hearing on Friday+ over 100 people spoke against the measure. Assembly Chair Chris Constant said he currently opposes the ordinance but expects a close vote that might pass despite a reported 3+1 opposition ratio.  Alaska's News Source

  • Anchorage sports saw several developments as the Bucs won their second straight Mayor’s Cup with key hits from Joey Nerat and Ky McGary in a series that ended in a 7-1 sweep, while Coen Niclai announced his transfer from Oregon to ASU to further his career. UAA signed guard Jeremiah Coleman for its men’s basketball team, Adam Hendrix reached the final table at WSOP where play will conclude today at 12:30 p.m.—and Curtis Hebert was drafted by the Astros.  Anchorage Daily News
