Good morning, Anchorage. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of July.

CRIME NEWS

  • Jeffrey Foreman, 53, died at the Anchorage jail early Friday morning after guards restrained him during an altercation with his cellmate, and the Alaska Bureau of Investigation is looking into his death—state troopers said he had charged officers when he became combative.  Anchorage Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists found that dead fur seals and nearby fish from Benson Beach on St. Paul Island last August had high levels of saxitoxin, marking the first clear case linking harmful algae to paralytic shellfish poisoning in marine mammals. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Stephen Ribuffo is no longer the Port Director of the Don Young Port of Alaska, the port office confirmed Monday. He had served with the port (since August 2007) and assumed the director role (in June 2015) but no reasons have been provided for his departure.  Alaska's News Source

HEALTH NEWS

  • Anchorage health officials noted that although over 1,200 measles cases have been confirmed nationwide across 38 states, only two cases have been reported locally. Experts warned that low vaccination rates, with children in the mid-80s and 54% of kindergartners vaccinated, leave the community vulnerable + vaccination remains the best defense against outbreaks.  Your Alaska Link
  • A state analysis finds that Anchorage, Juneau and Fairbanks face health care costs about 50% above the US urban average. Medical expenses in urban Alaska rose 7.8% in 2023 compared to an overall inflation rate under 2%—showing that locals spend a larger share of income on medical care than the national average.  Anchorage Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alaska's Adam Hendrix reached the final table of the World Series of Poker Main Event after beating over 9,800 players — he now holds 48 million chips and will get a payout of at least $1 million.
