COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Motorcycle riders in Anchorage honored Mike Sweet — an Air Force veteran and fire chief at Whittier’s Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel — after his recent death; the community held a memorial ride and ceremony to remember his devoted service.  Alaska's News Source

CRIME NEWS

  • Anchorage police said that after occupants of two vehicles exchanged gunfire Friday afternoon near Glenn Highway, one vehicle fled, ran a red light, and crashed on the Boniface overpass—bringing temporary closure while no arrests were made and police continued searching for multiple suspects as one injured person was taken to a local hospital.  Anchorage Daily News
  • The FBI is searching for a suspect who robbed Wells Fargo at 5th Avenue Mall last Friday when a man handed a note demanding money and stating he had a firearm at around 1:40 p.m.; witnesses say the man is about 5'5" (possibly in his 40s or 50s) and was seen sitting in a massage chair before leaving the scene.  Alaska's News Source

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Craig city council will debate a proposal on July 17 that would symbolically call the town 'Indian Country'—a move meant to acknowledge local tribal identity. Legal experts say the measure is only a statement since only Congress or the Department of the Interior can grant official status.  Must Read Alaska
  • The Alaska Division of Agriculture will host a listening session on July 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 1801 S Margaret Dr., Suite 12 in Palmer (held in-person and online) to explore a cooperative model for managing the Palmer slaughter plant, and Barbara Johnson from UAA will present on cooperative principles before inviting further discussion to shape future plans.  Must Read Alaska
  • The Anchorage Assembly postponed discussion of a proposed ordinance that would restrict camping near parks, trails, and schools and criminalize unauthorized construction on public land—officials say rising encampments in greenbelts raise safety concerns—and the measure will next be considered on July 15.  Must Read Alaska

SPORTS NEWS

  • ESPN senior writer Seth Wickersham, a 1995 Service High graduate who faced a setback as a high school quarterback, turned his dashed dream into inspiration for his second book, American Kings: A Biography of the Quarterback (set to release Sept. 9). He began his career with an internship at the Anchorage Daily News and built a reputation as a New York Times bestselling author whose work blends personal experience with investigative sports reporting.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Alissa Pili, a standout from Dimond High and former Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year, was released by the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday, July 12 and enters the waiver period (she will be free to sign with any team if unclaimed within 48 hours) after averaging just over six minutes per game. Pili was selected 8th overall in the 2024 draft (her rookie season included a career high 20-point game against the Phoenix Mercury) and struggled to find a role in a stacked rotation.  Alaska's News Source
