CRIME NEWS

  • Today at 8:30 p.m. on KTUU Channel 2, the documentary 'Kathleen Jo & Veronica: Who Else? — The Search for Brian Smith's Unwritten Victims' will air, showing how reporter Rebecca Palsha and photographer Rachel McPherron spent a year investigating the murders of Alaska Native women Kathleen Jo Henry and Veronica Abouchuk while Tracy Sinclare discusses the process.  Alaska's News Source
  • Winona Fletcher, who was 14 when she killed three people in the Russian Jack neighborhood in 1985 and received a life sentence, will face a judge in August to review her case—she has spent 40 years in prison and now seeks a chance for release.  Anchorage Daily News
  • Jesse Lee Jones, 28, was sentenced to 77 years for the 2023 murder of apartment manager Josiah Goecker and assault of Rosemarie Ortiz at Alpine Apartments in Anchorage — judges heard emotional remarks from Goecker’s family during sentencing.  Alaska's News Source

  • Port MacKenzie received a $7,891,044 federal BUILD Grant to build a 60,000-square-foot barge ramp that will improve barge haul-out and loading operations+congressional and borough leaders said the project may kickstart economic growth as construction is expected to begin as early as 2026.  Must Read Alaska

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An interdisciplinary team studied bowhead whale bowel samples from subsistence-harvested whales and found dangerous algal neurotoxins—saxitoxin appeared in over half of the samples. The study—published July 9 in Nature—shows that warming Arctic waters are raising toxin levels in whales, which may affect the local food web.  Alaska Beacon

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On July 1, a federal judge upheld the split management for Cook Inlet salmon harvests, with NMFS now managing waters beyond 3 nautical miles while the state handles nearshore fisheries—Alaska Attorney General Treg Tayor called the decision a win for local salmon management. The ruling follows a lawsuit brought by the United Cook Inlet Drift Association and confirms the current division between federal and state roles.  Alaska Public Media
  • On Thursday, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names approved name changes for two landmarks on Little Kiska Island—Nazi Creek was renamed Kaxchim Chiĝanaa and Nip Hill was renamed Kaxchim Qayaa. Michael Livingston of the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association said the decision honors local heritage while plans to rename Quisling Cove remain pending.  Anchorage Daily News
