- ➤ Father Emmet Engel, a former priest, ran a small monastery near Anchorage where he made milk wine that he claimed cured ailments and did not cause hangovers—state inspectors repeatedly challenged his unsanitary production practices. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday, crews fought fast-growing fires near Bonanza Creek and Goldstream Creek as hot, dry, and windy weather drove flames and led to evacuations near Little Goldstream Creek — they used air tankers, a Chinook helicopter with a 2,600-gallon water bucket, hotshots, and bulldozers to protect homes and roads. - ➤ A USGS report shows Alaska holds almost half of the undiscovered oil on federal lands and more than one-quarter of its natural gas — about 14.5 billion barrels of oil and 111 trillion cubic feet of natural gas mostly on the North Slope — which backs future plans for expanded oil development. - ➤ Anchorage climber Balin Miller, 23, made news this season by summiting Denali twice, including a solo climb on the Slovak Direct route and another on Mount Hunter. - ➤ A trio from the Alaska Boxing Academy won medals at the National Junior Olympics in Las Vegas last month — Rocky Williamson won silver in the boys heavyweight division while Nisilia Faavale and Analina Henderson also earned medals — and they secured spots on the USA Junior National Team.
