CRIME NEWS

  • Anchorage Police recently concluded Operation Summer Heat—a week-long crackdown targeting drugs, violence, outstanding warrants, theft, and traffic violations that resulted in over 100 arrests, 143 traffic stops, recovery of 2 stolen vehicles, and significant drug seizures—aimed at keeping local streets safe this summer.  Your Alaska Link

CULTURE NEWS

  • A statewide vote led by students declared the four-spotted skimmer dragonfly as Alaska’s official insect after it bested the mosquito, butterfly and bumblebee. Researchers note its fast, nimble flight and ability to fly backward — qualities that echo the maneuvering of bush pilots and have sparked further study of its wing movements.  Anchorage Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A statewide audit found Alaska’s Division of Public Assistance did not follow federal rules for Medicaid and SNAP and has struggled to clear its backlogs since staff cuts led to delays. U.S. senators secured a carve-out in the reconciliation bill so Alaska will not face penalty payments until 2028—lawmakers say the agency must solve its staffing problems soon.  Anchorage Daily News
